Casey Anthony appears in Tampa court for bankruptcy hearing

Last month we posted on the fact that Casey Anthony had filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy. With more than $792,000 in liabilities, a list of 80 creditors and just $1,100 in assets, she is a good example of when debts just get so far out of hand that bankruptcy really seems like the only option.

On Monday, for the first time since being acquitted of murder, the 26-year-old was seen in public when she arrived for a bankruptcy hearing in Tampa, Florida. Her court hearing was 50 minutes long and gave her the chance to answer questions from the trustee assigned to her bankruptcy case.

For right now, Anthony claims she is living off of the kindness of others. She reports not having a job or a car, living with friends and receiving gift cards and cash from others -- which are passed through her attorney -- in order to get by.

In looking at what creditors are listed in her Chapter 7 bankruptcy filing, Anthony supposedly owes $500,000 in attorney fees, $145,660 to the Orange County Sheriff's Office, $68,450 to the Internal Revenue Service and $61,505 to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. As one can see from the list, many of the creditors are tied to her 2011 criminal case where she was found not guilty of murder, but guilty for lying to investigators.

In general, Chapter 7 bankruptcy is known as a liquidation bankruptcy. Through this type of filing, assets are sold off and the proceeds are divided up among creditors. In exchange, qualifying debts are discharged. For those Florida residents struggling with debts, this is often the only way to wipe the financial slate clean and start over.
