Walla Walla Gardners Association files for Chapter 7

Bankruptcy touches everyone in some way whether you are going through it yourself or a company that you know is going through it. Last week it was announced that the Walla Walla Gardners Association closed its doors and are looking to file for Chapter 7 bankruptcy protection.

The well-known onion grower has been trying to keep their operation open, but they haven't had the needed grower base to keep going, according to their president. He attributes the downfall of the company to grower attrition due to retirement and a deal that fell through with Walla Walla asparagus. The company has been around for 96 years and the company's liabilities are expected to be more than $1 million.

According to the president, "sweet onion acreage from about nine growers was down to about 90 acres with storage onions at about 300 acres. In past years there were as many as 40 growers in the association and sweet onion acreage would average about 200 acres per year, with about 300 acres of storage onions."

The company tried to source onions from other regions to keep the operation going, but the company was getting nowhere. The board elected to close their operations in November. The closing of the company meant the loss of jobs for 15 full time employees and approximately 60 seasonal employees.

While the decision to file for bankruptcy is never easy, if you find yourself in a situation where you feel that bankruptcy is your only option, it's best to seek the advice of an experienced bankruptcy attorney. They understand the complexities of filing for bankruptcy and can work with you to lay out a plan that will get you the financial freedom and fresh start that you deserve.
